Does my small business actually need a website in 2026?

It's a fair question. Facebook pages are free. Instagram is free. Google Business Profile is free. You can take payments through Venmo. So why does a small business in Chicago need to spend money on a website?

The short answer: you don't always need one. But if any of the following are true for your business, you almost certainly do.

You need a website if clients Google you before calling

This is the majority of local service businesses. When someone needs a plumber, an accountant, a cleaning company, a doctor — they search Google first. They look at the results. If you have no website, or a website that looks like it was built in 2009, they move on to the next result. A professional website is now table stakes for being taken seriously.

You need a website if you want to rank in Google search

A Facebook page does not rank in Google search results the same way a website does. Google Business Profile helps, but it has limitations. If you want to appear when someone types "commercial cleaning Chicago" or "family dentist Schaumburg," you need a website with pages specifically targeting those phrases. There is no substitute for this.

You need a website if you want to look more credible than your competitors

Your competitor has a website. If you don't, clients who are comparing options will choose them — not because they're better, but because they look more established. A clean, professional website signals that your business is real, stable, and worth trusting with a job.

A website doesn't replace your phone, your word-of-mouth, or your Google reviews. It makes all of them work harder. It's a 24/7 salesperson that answers questions, shows your work, and captures leads while you're sleeping.

When you might not need one yet

If you are completely full on referrals, turning away work, and have no interest in growing — you might genuinely not need a website right now. Some businesses run entirely on word-of-mouth and do very well. If that's you, a website is a nice-to-have, not a must-have.

But most small businesses aren't in that position. Most are looking for more clients, more consistent leads, and a way to compete with businesses that have more resources. A website is the most cost-effective tool that exists for doing all three.

The real cost of not having one

Every month you don't have a professional website is a month where potential clients are finding your competitors instead of you. If a website brings in even one new client per month — and a properly built local site will bring in far more than that — it pays for itself in weeks, not years.

A custom website from PIXALPHA starts at $799. One new client from a service business typically generates far more than that in revenue. The math is straightforward.
