Google Business Profile (GBP) is the single highest-leverage free tool available to a local business. It's what powers the map results when someone searches "web designer near me" or "cleaning service Schaumburg." If your profile is incomplete or unclaimed, you're handing those searches to your competitors.
Here's exactly how to set it up properly.
Go to business.google.com and search for your business. If it exists, claim it. If not, create it. You'll need to verify your address — Google usually sends a postcard with a code, though phone and email verification are sometimes available.
Important: use your exact legal business name. Don't stuff keywords into your business name ("Best Chicago Cleaning Company LLC") — Google will flag it and it can get your profile suspended.
Incomplete profiles rank lower. Go through every section:
Profiles with photos get significantly more clicks than those without. Add at minimum: your logo, your team or location, and 3–5 photos of your actual work. For service businesses, before/after photos are extremely effective. Update photos regularly — Google rewards activity.
Reviews are the most powerful ranking signal in local search. Five genuine reviews will move you up in the map results noticeably. Ten will move you up significantly.
The easiest way to get reviews: after every completed job, text or email the client with a single sentence and a direct link to your review page. Most happy clients will do it — they just need the nudge and the link.
Respond to every review, positive and negative. Responses signal to Google that your business is active and engaged. For negative reviews: be professional, acknowledge the issue, and offer to resolve it offline. Never argue.
The Posts feature in GBP lets you publish offers, updates, and news directly to your profile. Businesses that post regularly tend to rank higher and get more engagement. Aim for one post per week — a current offer, a completed project, or a seasonal promotion. Takes 5 minutes.
Use the Services section to list everything you offer with prices if possible. This helps Google match your profile to more specific searches, and it gives potential clients information without having to visit your website.
With a complete profile and 5+ reviews, most local businesses see measurable improvement in local map visibility within 30–60 days. It's not instant, but it compounds over time. Every review, every post, every update builds your profile's authority in Google's eyes.
It's free. It takes a few hours to set up properly. There is no better ROI available to a small business.
